How should every day citizens respond to the climate of terror?

terror

On Tuesday, in Rouen, members of the Radical Islamist group, Daesh/ISIS/ISIL took hold of the church of Saint-Ettiene-du Rouvray, forcing Fr Jaques Hamel to kneel to the ground before he was beheaded in front of a horrified congregation.

This is the latest in a stream of attacks on people going about their daily business, and doing what they enjoy; A few days before, on the 18th of July, a 17 year old Afghan teenager heard shouting “Allah hu Akhbar”, attacked train passengers in Germany, and on Bastille day, Mohamed Lahouaiej-Bouhlel deliberately drove a truck into the crowd of men, women, and children celebrating in Nice. All of these attacks are on Western European citizens, Western European life, and Western European liberties.

I myself, with a couple of friends, plan to travel to Europe in the next couple of weeks, for a five day trip to Poland, doing the typical tourist things; taking in the sites, hanging with the locals, and probably drinking a fair bit. But is it safe to say that the threat is very real now? That anywhere we go, anything we do, we could end up being targets?

So what should we do?

Fight for freedom, in the most simple and profound way possible. Keep going about our daily lives.

We cannot let a group of vicious bullies dictate how we live our lives. If we stop living our lives normally, we stop living our lives completely. We become prisoners in a world we once freely roamed. Going to church, using public transport, celebrating national festivals- if we stop, they win. We will have handed our civil liberties and freedoms to them on a plate and given them the knife and fork to cut them up with.

We must not do this. We cannot live in fear.

On the 10th of August, my friends and I will be boarding a plane to Poland. Could this potentially put us in threat of terrorism? Hopefully not. But knowing it might isn’t going to stop us from doing what we love and isn’t going to stop us seizing every opportunity to live fulfilled lives, and it shouldn’t stop you.

Because, in the end, Freedom and Liberty, should always always triumph over fear.
