Our fabulous ‘Freedom Fizz’ event at CPC14

The Conservatives for Liberty team were feeling pretty jubilant last night: 260 conference attendees had piled into a room in the ICC to hear Dr Liam Fox MP and Jacob Rees-Mogg MP talking about freedom & liberty in the Conservative Party.

Our moment of nervousness before opening the doors proved unwarranted as you queued to get in…

…before grabbing a glass of prosecco and getting ready for speeches. I am somewhat surprised to report that the first thing we ran out of was orange juice (guys, what happened!?).

Our own Paul Nizinskyj kicked us off, talking about CfL’s growth and the uniting force of our values across the Conservative Party.

“Conservatives for Liberty was founded 18 months ago to offer a natural home to Conservatives like yourselves who feel freedom and liberty should be at the centre of everything we do in politics. Whether you’re a hawkish Atlanticist like Dr Fox, a traditionalist like Mr Rees-Mogg or a radical Whig like our president, Daniel Hannan, you are all welcome.”

Liam Fox began by raising a glass to the continuation of the UK – a sentiment echoed with loud cheers, not least from the large group of Scottish Conservatives present – before going on to talk about the importance of our values. These values set us apart, making us not just different, but better (read more of his views over on ConHome).

“Peace isn’t just the absence of war. Real peace requires the liberty to live your life as you see fit” – and that’s something you have to fight for, said Fox.

“Conservatism is synonymous with liberty. If the Conservatives are not the party of liberty, we are nothing.”

Jacob Rees-Mogg identified the root of liberty in Somerset, before educating us on the English inventor who made sparkling wine possible.

“Liberty is the cornerstone of everything we believe in,” he went on to say.

Mogg is clearly a darling of party members, and we appreciate his generosity in chatting to so many of the people who came.

Writing today I can hardly find that words to say how proud I am of how far CfL has come, and how excited I am to see where it goes next. Most importantly, this event proved the two things that have driven me and my team to put so much time and effort into Conservatives for Liberty: that liberty & freedom are values with broad appeal across the Conservative Party, and that there is a massive appetite amongst the Party faithful to talk more about them.
