The sugar tax is a bad policy being introduced for bad reasons and, worst of all, it’s another push down a slippery slope. Public health lobbyists have yet another win under their belt and they won’t stop there. You were warned.
It’s a regressive tax and, like all consumption taxes, will hit the poorest the hardest as a greater proportion of their income is spent on “sin taxes” and VAT. The poorest 10% of households already pay more than 20% of their gross incomes on duties and VAT – more than double the average household.
